Promote responsible packaging—say no to excessive wrapping.
Packaging is the general term for containers, materials, and auxiliary items used in a certain technical way to protect products during circulation, facilitate storage and transportation, and promote sales. Over-packaging refers to packaging that exceeds normal functional requirements, with excessive layers, void ratios, and costs beyond what is necessary. It usually manifests as excessive use of packaging materials, overweight, oversized volume, high costs, overly luxurious decoration, and exaggerated claims. So, what are the harms of over-packaging, and how can over-packaging behavior be managed?
Proper packaging design can better protect product quality, make each link in product circulation smoother, help enterprises promote products, and enhance corporate image. However, over-packaging brings serious harm and irreparable losses. It not only wastes resources by using unnecessary materials and increases unnecessary packaging costs but also increases household waste from packaging, adding to the burden of waste treatment and seriously polluting the environment. Most importantly, flashy but impractical products lose customers' trust, damaging the company's reputation and hindering long-term stable development. Therefore, we should advocate reasonable packaging, reduce packaging costs, and reject over-packaging!
Let's first look at an example of over-packaging. In daily life, many instances of over-packaging have deviated from the proper function of packaging. The luxurious packaging of mooncakes during the Mid-Autumn Festival once shocked people and caused public outcry. Major shopping malls and supermarkets were filled with mooncakes, with gift boxes that were elegant and dazzling, made of wood and metal, inlaid with pearls, jade, and agate, showcasing exquisite craftsmanship like rare treasures or artworks. However, the mooncakes themselves remained the same traditional flavor. Over-structuring, over-material use, and over-decoration were fully displayed in the mooncake packaging. Customers said, "It's all the mooncakes' fault, making me waste over three hundred!" The mooncakes protested innocently, "Who made me wear this bridal dress? I'm having a hard time!" So, who should pay for the dissatisfaction of customers, the mooncakes' grievances, environmental damage, and resource waste? Naturally, the enterprises. Behind over-packaging, some rejoice while others suffer. Customers see the exquisite gift boxes and buy the mooncakes, enterprises gain profits. But excessive resource waste makes future generations unhappy and pollutes the Earth. Can enterprises really keep laughing till the end? Customers are not fools; it will be hard to have repeat buyers. Pursuing short-term gains at the cost of long-term losses is not worthwhile. Over-packaging by enterprises is like lifting a stone only to drop it on their own feet; customer dissatisfaction leads to serious consequences! Besides food, health products and cosmetics share the same fate as mooncakes.
Now, let me summarize the harms of over-packaging. First, over-packaging wastes resources. It consumes excessive packaging materials, uses unnecessary resources, and increases packaging costs. Packaging raw materials generally include paper, glass, rubber, steel, plastic, etc., which originate from wood, petroleum, steel, and other primary materials. Therefore, most packaging materials are scarce national resources. Excessive consumption due to over-packaging causes resource waste. Although our country is rich in resources, indiscriminate exploitation without reasonable use and early awareness of resource protection will lead to regret when resources become scarce. Second, over-packaging pollutes the environment. After products reach consumers, packaging has fulfilled its role and becomes waste, losing its value. Excessive waste increases treatment burdens; some materials are non-degradable, making disposal difficult and causing pollution. The cost of over-packaging is also considerable, causing significant losses of manpower, material, and financial resources. Third, over-packaging infringes on consumer rights. Consumers pay for products (including product and packaging costs). Over-packaging increases consumer expenses without improving product function or quality, only adding unnecessary packaging costs. In the short term, attractive packaging may catch customers' eyes, but in the long run, flashy but impractical products make it hard for consumers to return. Untrustworthy enterprises cannot sustain long-term development.
To regulate enterprises' over-packaging behavior, the country has formulated corresponding laws, regulations, and standards, gradually establishing and improving management systems. These include the "Circular Economy Promotion Law," "Solid Waste Pollution Prevention and Control Law," "Clean Production Promotion Law," "Quantitative Packaging Commodity Measurement Supervision and Management Measures," "GB 23350-2009 Requirements for Limiting Over-Packaging of Commodities: Food and Cosmetics," "GB/T 31268-2014 General Rules for Limiting Over-Packaging of Commodities," among others, as well as some local supporting regulations. Enterprises should study these laws, regulations, and standards, regulate their behavior, package reasonably, and avoid over-packaging. Awareness should be promoted among every employee, clarifying the harms of over-packaging, emphasizing resource conservation and environmental protection, avoiding over-packaging design, and not producing over-packaged products. This will enable enterprises to develop stably and healthily in the long term.
With the progress of human society and the improvement of cultural quality, we have gained new understanding of the environment we live in. The pandemic has made us realize the community of human destiny, and excessive waste has made us aware of the importance of green environmental protection. It is believed that through national control, formulation of relevant standards, introduction of corresponding policies and regulations, and establishment of reasonable management measures, packaging products can be regulated and guided toward cost-saving and green environmental protection for healthy development. Rejecting over-packaging requires joint efforts from everyone. In our lives, each person should: advocate reasonable packaging, reject over-packaging, cherish national resources, respect customer needs, raise environmental awareness, and protect our beautiful home!
