Practical Exercise on the ISTA 1G Standard
1G is the overall performance testing standard for individually packaged products.
Can be used to evaluate the performance of packaged products
Can be used to compare the design performance of different packaging and products.
Packaging and the product should be considered as a unified whole, not as two separate entities.
May not include certain transportation conditions, such as humidity, atmospheric pressure, or abnormal handling operations.
Other ISTA programs can be used in different situations or to meet various requirements.
Specific recommendations:
Replacing random vibration with fixed-displacement vibration allows the use of ISTA Test Procedure 1A instead of 1G.
To test the minimum pressure value of the packaging unit, the ISTA Procedure 1C should be used.
For packages intended for international shipping, the ISTA Partial Performance Test Procedure 2A can be considered.
For packages transported via small-package shipping systems, the ISTA General Simulation Performance Test Procedure 3A can be considered.
For detailed test procedures and items, refer to the ISTA Testing Standards and the Draft Implementation Guidelines (previously introduced).
The 1G procedure applies to packages weighing 150 pounds (68 kg) or less.
(One exception: Individually packaged items with a slide or tray weighing more than 100 pounds (45 kg) may be tested according to the 1E procedure.)
1. Temperature and Humidity Pre-treatment Test

Environmental preconditioning helps packaging reach a stable state, ensuring that multiple samples or samples from repeated tests can be subjected to consistent conditions, thereby making the test results comparable.
2. Random Vibration

Vibration testing simulates the various vibration stresses that a product might encounter during road, rail, and air transportation, helping to determine whether the product can withstand environmental vibrations. For ISTA 1G vibration, the Grms level is 1.15g.
3. Drop

During actual transportation, packages undergo multiple manual handling operations, which may involve dropping or even tossing them. To assess the integrity of the package during these handling processes, a drop test is conducted. The drop height in ISTA 1G varies depending on the weight of the package.
