The review meeting for the group standard "Test Method for Melting Adhesion of Polystyrene Foam—Drop Cone Impact Method," drafted under the leadership of the China Packaging Research and Testing Center, was successfully held.

On May 29, 2023, the China Packaging Federation hosted a review meeting for the group standard titled "Test Method for Melting Bonding Performance of Polystyrene Foam," held in Tianjin through a hybrid online-and-offline format. The meeting was chaired by Wang Li, Vice President of the China Packaging Federation and Secretary-General of the National Technical Committee for Packaging Standardization. Attendees included 20 representatives from 15 organizations, such as the China Packaging Federation, the National Technical Committee for Packaging Standardization, the Light Industry Plastics Processing and Application Research Institute, the National Center for Quality Inspection and Testing of Plastic Products (Fuzhou), Guangdong Sanqing Intelligent Technology Co., Ltd., Zhongsu (Zhuozhou) Packaging Products Co., Ltd., Wuhu Hongyuan New Materials Co., Ltd., Wuxi Little Swan Appliance Co., Ltd., Haier Smart Home Co., Ltd., the EPS Specialized Committee of the China Plastics Processing Industry Association, the Manufacturing Technology Academy under the Lean Manufacturing Center of Midea Group’s Smart Home Business Unit, Tianjin University of Science & Technology, Tianjin Vocational University, the China Packaging Research & Testing Center, and the China Packaging Research Institute. The standard-setting organization—representatives from the China Packaging Research and Testing Center—presented a report explaining the process of drafting the standard. The expert attendees carefully discussed the draft standard chapter by chapter and clause by clause, resulting in the following review comments: The meeting concluded that the standard meets the advanced domestic level.

· Introduction to Standard Development ·

This standard has been developed under the requirements of the China Packaging Federation document titled "Notice on Issuing the Second Batch of 2021 Packaging Industry Group Standard Development Plans" (China Packaging Federation Quality Letter [2021] No. 53). The standard was proposed and is managed by the China Packaging Federation, with the China Packaging Research & Testing Center taking the lead in drafting the "Test Method for Melting Bonding Performance of Polystyrene Foam Used in Packaging," under plan number 2021021.

The China Packaging Research and Testing Center serves as the primary drafting organization, responsible for organizing, coordinating, and aligning efforts—particularly focusing on developing the standard framework, preparing the text, and ensuring accurate technical content.

Polyethylene foam plastic exhibits good initial cushioning performance, but after multiple impacts, it tends to fracture and crumble. This not only leads to a loss of its buffering capability, potentially damaging the product, but also poses a certain level of environmental pollution. Meanwhile, the material's fusion properties are a critical indicator—yet current testing methods used by companies often fail to ensure consistent foam performance. For instance, manually breaking open foam particles to examine their cross-sections is both time-consuming and prone to inconsistent results. Additionally, many companies lack the necessary equipment to conduct tensile and compression tests effectively. Currently, there is a lack of a quick and convenient method for testing the fusion bonding properties of this material domestically; therefore, a standard for fusion bonding test methods has been specially developed. 。

Given the current industry demand in China for the fusion properties of polystyrene foam plastics in transportation packaging, it is highly necessary to establish a group standard outlining a rapid testing method for the fusion characteristics of these materials.

This standard draws on the testing principles of the free-fall dart method from GB/T 9639.1, "Test Method for Impact Resistance of Plastic Films and Sheets," and the falling-ball method outlined in GB/T 14485, "Test Method for Impact Resistance of Rigid Plastic Sheets and Components Made from Engineering Plastics." It specifies the scope of application, test principles, technical requirements, specimen preparation, test procedures, acceptance criteria, and reporting guidelines. Primarily, it focuses on researching and defining the test principles, equipment specifications, and procedural steps for assessing the melt adhesion properties of polystyrene foam plastics, ensuring reliable and consistent results.
