Have you ever tried Lulu? Do you know what tests that canister is actually performing? (Part 2)

Xiaomin continues to guide everyone in learning more today.

Easy-to-Open Three-Piece Can

Food Safety Testing Programs

1. Compatibility

The compatibility of a three-piece can refers to the property where the can material, when in contact with its contents, does not produce any adverse reactions—such as off-flavors, discoloration, bubbling, or deformation.

Xiaomin Talks Testing: If the three-part can material is incompatible with its contents, it could compromise the quality and safety of the food or beverage, potentially leading to contamination of the product inside. Problems such as spoilage and contamination of products pose health risks to consumers. Additionally, compatibility issues may lead to deformation or cracking of three-piece cans, compromising packaging quality and shelf life.

2, Total Migration Volume

The total migration test involves simulating the contact between food and packaging materials, allowing migratable substances from the packaging to transfer into a food simulant. The total amount of these migrants is then measured through an evaporation-drying-weighing process.

Xiaomin Talks Testing: Because three-piece cans are coated to prevent them from softening when exposed to food, small molecules from the coating may migrate outward during contact with food, potentially ending up in the product and affecting the consumer's health.

3, Potassium permanganate consumption

The potassium permanganate consumption refers to the amount of substances in the can coating that can be oxidized by potassium permanganate as they migrate into the soaking liquid. Most of the substances oxidized by potassium permanganate are organic compounds that have migrated out, including polymer monomers, olefins, and others.

Xiaomin Talks Testing: This test determines whether the three-piece can contains soluble organic substances (such as polymer olefins, dimers, trimers, and other low-molecular-weight polymers). These soluble organic compounds can pose potential health risks if they enter the body through liquids.

4. Heavy metals (expressed as Pb)

Heavy metals pose certain risks to human health and the environment, and aluminum cans are required to undergo testing for heavy metals (expressed as Pb).

Xiaomin on Testing: This test determines whether tin cans contain excessive levels of heavy metals, with a limit set at no more than 1 mg/kg.

5, Residual and Migration Levels of Epichlorohydrin

Epoxychloropropane residue and migration testing refers to the quantitative analysis of epoxychloropropane residues and their migration levels in milk powder cans, conducted using specific methods or instruments.

Xiaomin Talks Testing: Epoxy chloropropane is a chemical used in the internal coating of three-piece cans, helping to enhance the can’s resistance to corrosion, abrasion, and chemical exposure. However, ECP may also exhibit some degree of migratory behavior—meaning that during manufacturing, storage, and use, ECP could potentially leach out of the coating and migrate into the contents inside the can, such as food or beverages.

6, Free phenol migration amount

Free phenol testing refers to the quantitative analysis of free phenols present in milk powder cans, conducted using specific methods or instruments.

Xiaomin Talks Testing: Due to the presence of coatings on three-piece cans, organic hazardous substances in the coating can easily migrate into food, posing a potential risk to human health. Free phenols, when absorbed into the body in sufficient quantities, can damage liver and kidney cells, leading to chronic poisoning.

7, Free Formaldehyde Migration Amount

Free formaldehyde testing refers to the quantitative analysis of free formaldehyde present in aluminum cans, conducted using specific methods or instruments.

Xiaomin Talks Testing: Free formaldehyde is a common harmful substance that may be found in certain plastics, paints, adhesives, and more. In the product, if the coating inside the three-piece cans contains free formaldehyde, this substance could potentially be released from the coating during manufacturing, storage, and use—and migrate into the contents of the can, such as food or beverages—posing a potential risk to human health.
