[Standard Insights] ISTA 3B Standard—Check Out the Valuable Tips Now
01
What is the ISTA 3B test?
ISTA 3B testing is a comprehensive simulation designed to evaluate transportation using an automotive (truck) delivery system, where various types of packages—often mixed from different shippers—are consolidated and shipped to diverse destinations. This type of transport is referred to as LTL Shipping , the target object in the ISTA 3B test is called LTL cargo packaging units 。
02
What are the packaging types for the ISTA 3B test?
03
How are packages classified for the ISTA 3B test?

04
What are the items included in the ISTA 3B test?
ISTA 3B testing involves numerous items—so, when it comes to your products, which ones actually need testing, and which can be skipped? And how can you ensure that your testing budget is spent wisely? This is something that probably gives many people quite a headache. Below, we’ve shared a handy table to make everything clear at a glance—don’t forget to save and bookmark it!

05
How are the ISTA 3B test procedures carried out? (Practical tips shared!)
Before testing, all packages must be positioned in their most stable orientation, with one of their smallest surfaces facing the tester—this surface is designated as "Surface 5." If one end of the package is noticeably heavier than the other, the heavier, smaller surface should face the tester. The orientation of the sample package should be marked as shown in the figure below:

-
Tilt/Tipover Test
How do you determine the center of gravity?
The center of gravity can be determined according to the standard BS EN 13054-2001, "Test method for determining the centre of gravity of packages in fully filled transport packaging."
A rigid horizontal platform is used to determine the equilibrium position of the package by placing the package on the rigid surface and then slowly and vertically pushing the sample away from the platform until either equilibrium is reached or tilting occurs.
The center of gravity is located at the point where a vertical line drawn from the package’s balanced position intersects the edge of the platform. To determine the package’s center of gravity, simply test its balance in three perpendicular directions.

-
Free Fall Test
The height for free drops is determined based on the weight of the package; standard values are provided in the table below:
[First Time]

[Second Time]
-
Rotational Edge and Corner Drop Test The challenge of this test lies in determining the drop height; refer to the data below for guidance:
-
Inclined-plane impact test (available as horizontal impact/free fall)
The velocity parameters for this impact test:

Random Vibration Testing

-
Concentrated Impact Test – Non-Rigid Containers

-
Forklift Handling Test – Palletized/Slideway-Packaged Items

-
Bridge Impact Testing
Standard long-condition test: Impact height of 16 in (410 mm), one impact per surface
-
Tipping Test
Standard long condition: Impact 3 surfaces once
Flat items: Impact each of the 3rd and 4th sides once
-
Concentrated Edge Impact Test
Flat items: Impact height of 16 in (410 mm), with a single impact on one side.
Accurate understanding of standards and proper mastery of testing methods are fundamental requirements for testing work. Correctly applying the ISTA 3B test procedure to package testing allows for a precise evaluation of the relevant packaging design, enabling optimization of product packaging and ensuring products are effectively and appropriately protected.
