Developed the theoretical framework for high-power frequency-doubling lasers, and the precise calculation method for optimal phase matching in biaxial crystals—originally invented by me—has since been widely recognized in the international academic community as the "Yao Technique" and "Yao Method," earning widespread adoption across the globe. In the field of novel laser technologies and their applications, I successfully pioneered highly efficient solid-state lasers, tunable lasers, and advanced series of frequency-doubled lasers, all of which have reached cutting-edge international standards. Additionally, I have overseen and completed over 50 significant research projects.

We were among the first in China to initiate research on terahertz wave technology, undertaking several national-level projects, including those under the military-focused 863 Program. Additionally, we organized and hosted the 270th Xiangshan Science Conference in 2005, focusing on the latest advancements in terahertz science and technology. In 2006, the Terahertz Wave Expert Committee of the Chinese Institute of Electronics was established, along with its inaugural academic conference, and I served as the vice-chairperson. That same year, I also led a collaborative effort involving numerous leading research institutions to draft the "Proposal for Developing Terahertz Wave Science and Technology in China," which was submitted to the Ministry of Science and Technology. This proposal has since been selected as a key project for prioritized funding under the 2007 973 Program.
