Key achievements:
Developed the theoretical framework for high-power frequency-doubling lasers, and the precise calculation method for optimal phase matching in biaxial crystals—originally invented by me—has since been widely recognized in the international academic community as the "Yao Technique" and "Yao Method," earning widespread adoption across global research circles. In the field of novel laser technologies and their applications, I successfully pioneered highly efficient solid-state lasers, tunable lasers, and advanced series of high-efficiency frequency-doubled lasers, all of which have reached internationally competitive, cutting-edge levels. Additionally, I have overseen and completed over 50 significant scientific research projects.
We were among the first in China to initiate research on terahertz wave technology, undertaking several national-level projects, including those under the military-focused 863 Program. Additionally, we organized and hosted the 270th Xiangshan Science Conference in 2005, focusing on the latest advancements in terahertz science and technology. In 2006, the Terahertz Wave Expert Committee of the Chinese Institute of Electronics was established, with me serving as its Vice Chairman. That same year, I also led a collaborative effort involving numerous prestigious research institutions to draft the "Proposal for the Development of Terahertz Wave Science and Technology in China," which was subsequently submitted to the Ministry of Science and Technology. This proposal has now been officially included as a key project receiving priority funding under the 2007 973 Program.
